Noh Kitty eclectically and experimentally draws on a diverse range of musical styles, moods, and genres. Effects-laden guitars freely entangle with analog synthesizers, tablas, drums, and other machines in the service of a song. The serious and the absurd are blended into expressions of ambiguity, irony, and joy. Rich vocal harmonies ornament the sonic landscape, which is based on juxtaposing the extreme with the simple, the ridiculous with the earnest, and the tuneful with the discordant. Rhythms and meters are drawn from a broad range of global styles, including Balinese gamelan, early Hip Hop, North Indian Hindustani music, and 70s prog rock. Noh Kitty’ debut album “It’s Hard to Say,” addresses themes of doubt and uncertainty with songs ranging from simple folk textures to heterogenous layers of synthesizers, vocal harmonies, samples, drums, and gnarled guitars. Their new album, “El” explores themes of loss and the passing of time, with another sonic experiment in genre and instrumental combinations, featuring guitars, bass, cellos, sitars, analog synthesizers (Moog and Oberheim), drums, tablas, samples, and melodic vocals.
